While you bide your time and dream of colours, we are pleased to present our 20 new “homemade” varieties: 3 historic Cayeux irises, 2 intermediate irises and 15 tall bearded irises which took shape in our research fields.
Since the beginning of the 2000s, we have intensified our hybridisation work, which enables us to create increasing numbers of new varieties each year.
Over 400 different cross pollinations are carried out in May and, almost simultaneously, we observe thousands of seedlings flowering for the first time, whilst others are going through the multiplication process. This is a very thorough task and only 2 to 3 plants out of every 1000 actually make it into our new collection each year. The following step being the various Florence, Munich, London or Moscow iris competitions which will judge these new plants. This provides an opportunity to compete against the beloved children of the world best creators (Americans, Australians…)
Among the Cayeux tall bearded irises which we are introducing in 2013, we are particularly fond of 'Villa Erba', named after the famous filmmaker ‘Luchino Visconti’s, Lake Como Residence, and by 'Nelly Tardivier', named in memory of the Louvre and Tuileries Gardens Director, where this mysterious and attractive new variety will be christened at the end of May.
From 1st March, you will be able to reserve them by ordering them on our website www.iris-cayeux.com
